Upgrades to JibberJobber from Last Week

Upgrades to JibberJobber from Last Week Buy my LinkedIn DVD at 50% off (while supplies last). We recently got feedback from our survey of user requests, and then met as a team to discuss, prioritize and assign work orders.  We were all jazzed to plan out the first part of 2010 and make JibberJobber more intuitive and more powerful.  There is a lot of great stuff coming down the pipeline, and no suggestions where ignored. Here are some updates we released last week (did you notice any of them?): icalendar: you can now export your entire list of log entries and action items to a iCalendar format, which youd then import to Google Calendar, Outlook, your Mac, or whatever you are using. You can also export things one at a time. Merge option for companies: we had this for contacts for a while, and somehow overlooked doing it for companies oops! Title change on List Panel pages: I talk about List Panels but nowhere on the site could you see list panel in a page. So we made this very simple name change, and now when you are on a List Panel page youll know it. A little design consistency to help make the training more intuitive. Referred by column now on Contact List Panel: Referred By is one of the most powerful things in JibberJobber and now you can see the column on your Network Contacts List Panel. Events 2.0: still needs some work (I sent 1.5 pages of changes to the developer), but this is awesome allows you to add your own local network opportunities so all JibberJobber users can see them. Ill talk about this more after more development is done, but you can go add your own events now (or look at what other users have added). New fields on contact form: preffix, suffix: I debated taking this out but after we released it I got an email from a user who works in an industry where this is critical the email was a huge YIPPEE so we leave it in Ability to print the Log Entries and Action Items Report: this is a busy report, and now its printer friendly. Ability to delete a Networking Relationship Goal: This is a cool feature, even though I hardly talk about it. Anyway, if you use it, you can now DELETE these goals There were also some minor bug fixes, as well as some nomenclature (wording) changes around the site. Resume Grading Service

Resume Grading ServiceResume grading services have become more common in recent years. Instead of putting together a resume one at a time, they offer the services of a professional resume writer to grade your materials so that you have them ready for the job interview. This is great for both you and the company that is offering the service. They will save you time and money and give you a chance to prepare for the job interview. There are certain requirements that most employers require before they will hire you and this means that your resume needs to meet those certain requirements before it is sent out. If your resume does not meet the requirements, you will be skipped over, and thus they won't be offered the job.Employers will look for information on your past employment, which usually begins with the position that you held. You can provide the information on your resume. The more information you provide, the better chance you have of being hired. It is also helpful to provide inf ormation that has little relevance to the position you are applying for.Your education as well as your work experience and other affiliations will be helpful in determining your potential and whether or not you should be hired. You want to be seen as someone who is willing to be at a company for some period of time in order to prove yourself worthy of a position. The more recent your employment information is, the more valuable it is to your potential employer.Specific information can be found on your resume. It is important to make sure that the information you provide is both relevant and accurate. You also want to ensure that it is presented correctly. You can find resume grading services online and can usually get them for a flat fee, so there is no need to worry about getting a bad deal. Each company that offers resume grading services will grade your resume based on a number of factors including the current industry standard, previous work experience, education, letters of refe rence, current hobbies, and even any information that is listed in your name. It is the goal of the resume grading service to find you an appropriate position and help you move up in your career.Certain companies are accredited by the Better Business Bureau and some can also provide references for you to contact. You can use these references to help you further your resume and present yourself more favorably to a potential employer. Your references can also help in your networking with current and former colleagues. You should always remember that you should not place too much emphasis on a certain company. Before you know it, they will take you off of the list and not even give you a chance to go back to their website. Use resume grading services to give yourself a fighting chance and hopefully get the job you want in the end.

How Social Collaboration Can Benefit Your Business

How Social Collaboration Can Benefit Your Business What is social collaboration and learning? How can organisations benefit from using these? To find out Ive had a chat with James Tyer who is the Global Lead of Social Collaboration Lead at Kellogg Company. You can listen to the podcast interview on iTunes and SoundCloud (embed below) or read a summary below. Questions by yours truly, answers by James. You are a Global Lead of Social Collaboration, what does that involve? Over the course of my career, I got more and more interested in how I could help people learn from each other through connection and networks than writing formal courses for them. Of course there is always a need for the formal but I got far more interested in the social and the informal. So I was employed by Kellogg Company a year ago to make a specific piece of social technology, in this case its Microsofts Yammer, successful globally. It requires quite a change in company culture, and I was lucky enough to be hired under a group that is all about the future of IT at Kellogg. Why do companies need social collaboration and learning? Well lots of companies have pretty outdated business models. They tend to be structured very hierarchically, focus on command and control. Were going back to Frederick Taylor, and Henry Ford, and management making the decisions and everyone else doing the work who are kind of cogs in the machine that just did one thing. But as the worlds got more complex, and especially the amount of information thats available to everyone, companies are starting to realise, Well, how do we tap in to this more networked way of thinking? You can be more networked, you can be more agile, you can respond to consumer demands, industry market demands, and employees. And it tends to be that if you focus on specifically the behaviours and culture that make social collaboration, and social is in quotes, collaboration has to be social, thats the term that we use. If you put these things in place, then you tend to have a more engaged work place. Its more of a community feeling. Theres more transparency from le adership. Theres more accountability as well, and that can lead to greater innovation as ideas are shared more freely and people have more ownership of those ideas and, of course, workers can be more productive because a lot of the politics and organisational process that gets in the way of their work, slowly gets removed. How can you implement this? Well I think that first thing  that everyone has to do, is do some kind of cultural assessment. We talk about the technology. The technology firms talk about their technology, but really, and the technology firms might not like this too much, but all of it does the same thing. They do some bits better than others, but youre really dealing with the culture. So understand the culture. How are employee connections made? What is leadership like? What is the command process like? How are decisions made? All of those kind of things, and once you have a good understanding of that, you can also probably have a really good understanding of how the business actually works. And once you get that far, you can actually start finding used cases, and I find the way that you have to approach this is its one conversation at a time. Its maybe one person. It might be five people that you just have a conversation about what do they find frustrating. What are they hoping to achieve? What are their business goals? And then see if you can find a way to use some of the technology to help that. Very importantly, you have to find some leadership engagement. Whats Working Out Loud? Actually, well, a lot of what makes organisations and the culture of organisations the way they are, are the assumptions we carry about what people are doing, and what they are thinking, and what theyre working on. So Working Out Loud is a way of getting out of your head and into a place where other people can see what youre doing. Another way of calling it is narrating you work, and theres some great people that speak about it. I urge anyone listening to go look up John Stepper, Simon Terry, or Jane Bozarth, who has an awesome book called Show Your Work as well. And what they say is if you share what youre working on, whether its in a draft, or its an idea, or if its, I dont know, a photo, it could be anything, then others in your organisation will see what youre doing and you can accomplish a number of things. First is a lot more ideas. People will share their ideas, theyll give you your feedback, all of those kind of things, so, from there, you can get new products, new services and all that kind of stuff. You can avoid repeating the wheel. LinkedIn or internal employee profiles? Thats  a difficult question. Its a bit of a jump, but if Im thinking that Im working out loud, Im putting some of what Im doing internally externally into my networks and hopefully bring some value to them, so people can learn from me, just as I do from others. I think something that your LinkedIn profile, which is outward facing and internal facing, because anyone can go and see it. Why would you spend a lot of time completing an internal intranet profile, when you can have a much more active, live LinkedIn profile, or about me, or a blog site, or, doesnt have to be LinkedIn, of course. Why would you spend all this time with this internal only facing thing, when theres something much more open and transparent for everyone to see? Whats the best tech? I dont think any one technology is better than the other. Its the behaviours, like habit building, the personal knowledge management that really help. And it depends on where your industry is, it depends on where the people are. For me, I find Twitter is one of the most helpful for my learning networks. Although, you have to remind yourself when you get in to some of them that youre talking to people that probably think very similarly to you as you get in to these networks. You want to have a diverse array of opinions, if you can get them. So Facebook might be great for something, the internal social networks, Yammer, Jive. Ive forgotten all the others. There are so many now. All of them can work for you. But you have to build your own networks too. So it takes time to get in to them and to show that youre valuable to them and also, you have to meet the people where they are. What do the  next 3  years have in store? Well, the one I see happening directly because I have to use Yammer, is we seem to be going back to big enterprise suites again as Microsoft pushes Office 365 and a lot of the HR systems and other systems are a sales force and so forth, are trying to bring everything back in to the one big thing again, and its actually a shame because, I think its David Weinberger that said that we want small things kind of loosely connected with people as those connections. So you can have a number of different networks but its all about the people and as the technology gets more, the cognitive load that it places on you gets more, so itll be interesting to see what happens and whether some of the smaller companies, with specific offerings will actually get bigger traction. Analytics is going to be one. Internal social analytics, I think, are going to get bigger, and in the learning space, of course, learning analytics as well. We havent talked too much about the formal learning space, but just because of where I sit. And I think just more good examples of whats happening, and especially, I think, through mobile as well. I think thats something thats not looked at hugely, so far, even though most of us probably access all of our social stuff on our phones these days. The Power of Female Engineers

The Power of Female Engineers In no surprise to anyone, engineering is not the most female-friendly field. Despite composing 50 percent of the world’s population and nearly 51 percent of American citizens, as well as over 47 percent of the U.S. workforce, women claim only about 18 percent of engineering jobs. Worse, engineering, like other STEM fields, is perceived as male; thus, the existing hordes of male workers as well as overwhelming cultural pressures make it difficult for women to become engineers and succeed in engineering fields. Still, many persevere, in large part thanks to mandates from the government and business leaders to bring in more female talent. But not all engineering jobs are the same. Each job requires different skills and qualification than the other. For instance, if you are looking for a position thats more sales-oriented but still in the engineering arena, then you must have a degree in communication. But if you are looking for a career in engineering  that has more traditional engineering functions, you must have a degree in engineering. Yet, due to ingrained sexism, resistance to change, or misguided curiosity, a question many men in engineering fields continue to ask is “But, shouldn’t we hire the best person for the job rather than hiring for diversity?” What they often fail to realize is that women are the best people for the job ? and here’s why. Women Engineers Have Different Perspectives Most engineers are tasked with finding simple, effective solutions to difficult challenges. However, not all problems have easy answers, and often, an issue cannot be resolved using the same tactics used in prior projects. Thus, different perspectives are vital in engineering, where a new angle often offers the best solution. While much work is being done to lessen the divide between men and women, but even if gender roles are abolished, women and men will continue to experience the world in different ways. Women engineers can contribute perspectives that men tend to lack. Often, male engineers overlook essentially female issues, but female engineers can help engineering firms resolve problems for both male and female populations. For example, inventors and entrepreneurs Miki and Radha Agrawal are profiting greatly by making unique observations and finding new solutions. Women Engineers Understand Opposition Little is easy for women hoping to find career success in any field, but female engineers face an overwhelming amount of opposition. From their classroom days to their time in the workplace, women must constantly prove their worthiness in engineering. Widespread cultural stereotypes assume that women are less capable of complex math and science, are less logical, and less able to solve problems, which mean those women who persevere in engineering most exude those qualities thoroughly. What’s more, this constant opposition helps female engineers develop toughness and a self-confidence that makes them excellent candidates for engineering leadership. After obtaining advanced online engineering degrees, women engineers can rise to a level of authority and positively influence the future treatment of women in the field. Then, the opposition might lessen and men and women might have equal opportunities for engineering jobs. Women Engineers Are Excellent Teammates Though prevailing cultural belief states that men compete and women cooperate, studies have found that idea to be patently untrue. A more accurate statement is: Men and women cooperate differently. Women tend to be more social in their co-working relationships, communicating transparently and often with their teammates while collaborating on related aspects of a project. Meanwhile, men tend to be task-oriented and solitary workers who cooperate by splitting up projects into discrete portions. Neither cooperation method is wrong; in fact, both can be ideal in engineering projects. What’s more, men tend to have trouble cooperating with other men, whom they see as rivals ? and the same is true of women working with other women. Thus, a team comprising one gender alone is unlikely to boast peak productivity. Female and male engineers working together can accomplish tasks more efficiently and effectively than male engineers working alone. Women Engineers Want to Make a Mark Finally, most career women ? including those within engineering ? secretly want to do something meaningful. As female tech leader Diane Bryant said, “Women want to change the world; men want to rule it.” Engineering is a field uniquely equipped to change the world for the better: Civil engineers work to build better cities; biomedical engineers endeavor to save more lives; and other engineers hope to create devices that make people safer and happier. This field needs women to remind leaders of the profound impacts of engineering ? not just on men, but on everyone and everything.

Key Things You Need To Know Before Starting A Business - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

Key Things You Need To Know Before Starting A Business Once you’ve thought of a great business idea, most people will make the mistake of rushing straight into things. However, patience is a virtue, and a little preparation can go a long way. Your innovative ideas might be brilliant, but it won’t mean anything if you don’t follow a winning business plan. Starting out can be very daunting, but there are plenty of success stories for inspiration. With the right drive and determination, you should be just fine. And these simple tips will put you on the road to success. First Impressions Are Everything In business, you only get one chance to make a great first impression. Failure to do so could wreck your chances of a sale, regardless of how great your products and services are. Therefore, you must take all necessary precautions to ensure that the brand image is great. Standout logos and branding will clearly help. However, it’s important to remember the other elements that people will judge you on. Securing a mail forwarding address will provide the illusion that the operation is based in a sought after location. This one trick can make a world of difference when looking to build a positive reputation. Similarly, you must ensure that your online presence is strong. Even if the company deals primarily with an offline audience, people will use the net for research purposes. Low Running Costs Add Flexibility When you first start out, it’s very tempting to blow your budget in the hope of securing big profits. While you do need to spend money to move the business forward, it’s imperative that you keep overheads as low as possible. Roughly 90% of new businesses fail, and that’s because they run out of funds before getting their ventures off of the ground. Learning to walk before you run will buy you more time. Besides, it gives you more flexibility to offer better prices to the customer too. Any investment made should actively boost the business. Meanwhile, you should be eager to find the best deals on energy rates and other indirect costs. Many Hands Make Light Work In a bid to keep costs low, you may find yourself trying to take on too much work. However, running a business is difficult work, and you cannot conduct every task by yourself. Every great business owner understands that a successful company needs an equally brilliant team behind it. Nowadays, video interviewing makes the recruitment process easier than ever. Furthermore, you could look at the prospect of outsourcing certain tasks too. Just remember to keep the staff motivated too. A team that works together succeeds together. The Customer Must Come First Ultimately, your business is nothing without the customer. As such, keeping them happy should always be job number one. Obviously, you need to provide the best goods and services. However, you shouldn’t underestimate the importance of great customer care. Showing your gratitude will build stronger relationships. In turn, this will inevitably increase your sales figures too. Invest in the customer and they’ll invest in your business. It’s a simple philosophy, but it will serve you well.

The 30-hour workweek. Promising or pipe dream - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

The 30-hour workweek. Promising or pipe dream - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog There is currently huge interest in the 30-hour workweek in many workplaces . But is this just a pipe dream or could it actually lead to better results, happier workplaces and less stress? In this video I talk to Lena R?belmann and Juliana Wolfsberger who have written a masters thesis called The 30-hour Workweek -A Promising Alternative for Knowledge Workers? at Lund University School of Economics and Management about their findings. My favorite: Switching to a 30-hour workweek does not reduce output. People get as much work done as they did before, even though they work fewer hours. If you want to know more, Juliana and Lena are happy to share their findings. You can reach them here: Juliana Wolfsberger Lena R?belmann Other companies are finding the same thing, including Toyota Center Gothenburg, who?12 years ago, went from a normal 40-hour work week to only working 30 hours a week and found that employee happiness, productivity, customer satisfaction and profits all went up. At our2015 Happiness at Work Conference, CEO Martin Banck explains why they made that weird decision, how they did it in practice and what has happened since then: Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. And if you want more great tips and ideas you should check out our newsletter about happiness at work.
